FCMS Conference
October 8 - 10, 2010
Los Angeles

2009

Hello everyone,

Thank you to all who came out on Sunday and thank you to Dr. Peter Lin for moderating the session! The audience participation and questions posed to our stellar panel of hepatitis B gurus were fantastic and we learned a great deal about the natural history of hepatitis B, its complications, and its management. The critical importance of tracking the hepatitis B DNA titre was a dominant theme that emerged from the talks, case presentations, and Dr. Lin's "were-you-awake" quizzes.

Now I would like to change gears and promote a conference that the FCCP is hosting on Sunday, October 25 from 8:30 to 3:00 at La Rosa Grand Hall. Those of you who have school-age children should find this relevant and helpful in answering some burning questions. As parents, how can we help our child to get the most out of her education, whether it be acquiring literacy and numeracy, developing a strong work ethic, or becoming a socially responsible individual? What should you do if your child is gifted? What are the differences between the Montessori method and the traditional curriculum? Does the International Baccalaureate program offer advantages over the traditional curriculum or the Advanced Placement program and what are the potential weaknesses in each of these streams? What are your investment options for educational savings plans?

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to Ms. Roslyn Tsao (Legal Section). The cost is $40 per adult and $25 per child under 12 and includes a buffet lunch.

I hope to see some of you there!

Sincerely,

Eric Leong, AB, MD, FRCPC, DABIM
President, Chinese Canadian Medical Society

The Tecla Lin Nursing Education Fund was started at West Park to honour the memory of this amazing woman and create a legacy that would grow in her name. Every year the Tecla Lin bursary provides funds that help one West Park nurse pursue his/her educational goals.

The Chinese New Year Ball is a wonderful time to get to meet new friends and to reunite with old friends. We encourage you to support this worthy cause by attending the 2005 FCCP Ball. The tickets are only $110 per person and includes entry, dinner, non-alcoholic drinks, dessert buffet and automatic entry to all raffles. The FCCP Education Foundation has as its objectives the promotion of higher education and providing financial support to needy students in this current environment of escalating tuition fees and other expenditures. It currently supports 60 scholarships and awards in 13 Ontario universities and post-secondary educational institutions. This is achieved through the income generated from the Capital Fund, which is kept untouched.

Last year, the FCCP Education Foundation celebrated its 20th Anniversary. We are all aware of the increasing financial costs for medical education over the last few years. The CCMS had offered two $250 scholarships in Anatomy and Metabolism and a $2000 entrance scholarship. A further contribution of $20,000 by the CCMS has allowed us to increase these amounts from $250 to $500 each and $2000 to $2500 respectively. We would encourage CCMS members to make a donation individually if possible as well. Tax receipts will be issued for contributions of $50 or more. You may send your cheque to: Coral Place, 55 Glenn Hawthorne Blvd., Mississauga, Ontario, L5R 3S6 made payable to "FCCP Education Foundation" re: CCMS medical scholarships.

FCCP DEALS

FCCP membership cards were mailed out to CCMS members in December of 2004. The FCCP card expiry year poses some confusion among our members who believe that they are paid up for their CCMS fee for the coming year (ie. 2005). Please do not use the FCCP card as an indication of whether your CCMS membership is active since the FCCP card has a grace period of one year. CCMS membership fees cover membership from January 1 to December 31 of the year it is paid.

Attached is a list of FCCP membership discounts available.
