Celebration of the Life of
Dr. Peter Lee (1943-2014)

Dr. Peter Lee
Date: July 14, 2014
Time: 7 - 9 PM
Location: The Chinese Cultural Center of Greater Toronto
5183 Sheppard Ave East

It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to Dr. Peter Lee who passed away on June 21, 2014. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Pat, his children Deborah (Martin), Jason (Nicole) and Katrina (Paul), his two devoted grandchildren Kyle and Ryan, and all of us from the CCMS as his friends and colleagues.

Dr. Peter Lee had garnered numerous national and international awards and accolades as a distinguished rheumatologist, with his primary clinical and research work on scleroderma. He had been very active in serving our community, including being one of our former Presidents as well as a former President of the Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals (Ontario). He had just been admitted to our CCMS Hall of Fame. Peter will be lovingly remembered by all of us as a kind, caring, and compassionate man, who generously shared his intellect, passion, and friendship with all of us and to all those lives he had touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested (if wish) donations be made in Dr. Peter Lee’s name to: Scleroderma Research-Arthritis Research Foundation (UHN); the Prostate Cancer Research Centre at Princess Margaret Hospital; the Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals (FCCP) Education Foundation; or Chinese Cultural Center of Greater Toronto (CCCGT)

Please come join us for the Celebration of Dr. Peter Lee’s Life to be held on Monday July 14th.

Stem Cell Drive

July 13, 2014

The Honourable Madam Justice Pawagi has recently appeared in the Toronto Star to highlight the importance of creating a stem cell registry drive. Madam Justice Pawagi is currently battling leukemia and requires a stem cell transplant.  Her article details her strength and highlights the lack of donors who are of ethic minorities. There will be a stem cell registry drive held in Mississauga on July 13, 2014 in an effort to locate a match for Madam Justice Pawagi and others battling this disease.

This directly affects our community as well.  There is at least one Chinese organization (OtherHalf - Chinese Stem Cell Initiative) that deals with the same initiative – getting Chinese people tested as possible matches for stem cell transplants.  This organization is determined to close the gap of Chinese under representation in the Canadian donor registry and works in collaboration with OneMatch, a member of the global stem cell network. This link details the upcoming Chinese cultural events where cheek swabs will be collected.

The Canadian Blood Services changed the age range in 2013 and they are asking for people who are 17 to 35 to attend stem cell drives to have their cheeks swabbed. However, if you are not in that age range, the Canadian Blood Services still needs your help.  There is a high need for O negative blood and if you are not in the age range above, you can still help by donating blood as people battling leukemia are in need of frequent blood transfusions.

Please see the notice above regarding a stem cell registry drive that has been organized in the hopes of finding a match.  Please distribute this to your patients, friends or anyone who may be in a position to assist. Thanking you in advance for your participation in this important cause!
